Why? For decades now the tower has been a landmark for Oxbow - a destination for hikes after picnics and a challenge for kids to "conquer". Was the thrill for the hooligan(s) that torched it equal to the pleasure the tower brought to 100's if not 1000's of people over the years? Sadly, the penalty should they be caught probably won't even pay for the replacement. Sickening. My hope is that they catch the delinquents, have them perform meaningful community service (Oxbow park maintenance for a year), and their parents foot the bill for replacement. My belief is they'll get a waggle of a finger and boasting rights for being the arsonists.

Sad and while it may be true if this was an intentional act, it would have been juvenile in nature..however, that's not to say the perpetrators would necessarily need be juvenile in age.

We're surprised it hasn't happened before now. Vandals love to destroy anything. Playground equipt., out bldgs., and other things have to always be built with the thought in the back of the designer's minds that everything has to be constructed to withstand vandalism attempts. Look at the constant issue of picnic tables in McNaughton park being thrown into the river, and that's only one small issue.

How sad!!! I have soo many memories of that tower throughout my entire life! We just had family pictures taken there last year! I hope who ever did this is caught and punished with more than a "shame on you".

To the Park Board: Please rebuild this tower! I would be happy to contribute time and/or money to see this rebuilt!

i agree  this was probably youth with nothing better to do they think

that tower has been there for almost 40 yrs, and all four of my children learned to climb there.  as with many there is nothing likethe first time they made it to the top and look over the rail and say" i made it mom"

im

sure there are many more moms that know that face.

let hope they  put it back up ot raise funds to do so a. i now live in ny but would gladly put my twenty dollars in to rebuild it

This is such a shameful cowardly act that just makes me sad and angry for a couple of reasons.  I have my own memories as a child on how big a deal it was for us to "Climb the Tower" all the way to the top of the crow's nest (which had been removed for sometime)  It surely was a landmark in Elkhart county for many years and it's a terribly sad thing that future generations won't get to climb the same tower than mom/dad/older siblings climbed.

Another reason much more personal reason is...My husband and I were married at the top of that tower just last year and we're both very saddened and angry that a spot that evokes such sweet memories for us was so callously disrespected and destroyed out of nothing more that someone's perverse pleasure in destroying something so iconic to Elkhart county.

It's obvious that so many people have special memories of this tower.

I'm embarassed to say I've lived in the area my entire life, and not once climed the tower....guess I thought it would always be there.  Lesson learned.

I hope the county can somehow find the resources to rebuild.

I promise to climb to the top if they do. Smile

This is such a sad event to have occurred-- what a senseless stupid act on some kids part--- i have memories thru out my entire life of this beautiful tower-- as kids ( and adults) we used to love to run back and forth on it and feel it rocking-- reminds me of many years ago when the old covered bridge by fairfield was burnt down--- Shame on the vandal responsible-- and hope park rebuilds it
