The citizens of Elkhart can't afford a trash fee increase but they can af ford to do without the police and fire protection that may save their lives.  There is an expression that goes " don't throw out the baby with the bath water"  Can anyone tell me where that came from? Many years ago the oldest and most important in the family took their bath first.  In the same water everone else took their bath.  By the time they got to the baby the water was very dirty and not clear.  So if you were not paying attention you could indeed throw out the baby with the bath water.  I fear the city of Elkheart is doing just that.

The Truth reported   'Monday’s shift in focus to personnel left Osborne surprised.

“What’s up with that?” Osborne asked rhetorically.'

This is the type of response we expect from Mr Osborne.  The man has his head in the sand.

Congratulations to the Republican job creators on the City Council (Mary Olson, Kyle Hannon, David Henke and Brian Thomas) and Democrat Ron Troyer for adding six more workers to the 47% "...who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it." (Candid quote from the "real" Mitt Romney.)

Perhaps some of Elkhart's police and firefighters might charitably reconsider accepting three furlough days in order to restore the jobs of those six city workers.

Is it the "Golden Rule" or the "Gold that Rules" that governs our conduct?

You miss the point, JackN.  The action of the City Council adds to the group of those who will pay no taxes, or who will pay less in taxes as a result of their unemployment.  Asking individuals to consider charitably sharing a small portion of what they have rather than have some go without is not using the city payroll as welfare.  Even Romney says he cares about the 47% he disparaged with his thoughtless, off-the-cuff remark when he thought only his supporters were watching.  Are our uniformed protectors as uncaring as you and a majority of the City Council appear to be?

Is it no wonder that Republicans voted to eliminate code enforcement?  Now when someone becomes harmed due to lack of enforcement of laws, I am sure they will step up to the plate and tell society that the victims were just leaches on society and the profits those companies gained offset whatever loss they may suffer.

After all, it was lack of enforcement that has killed two already in Indiana in the multistate fungal meningitis outbreak.  But that company's CEO will survive just fine.

Pega,

Here's what you don't understand.  According to emails I've exchanged with multiple City Council Members,

Here's what you don't understand.  According to emails I've exchanged with multiple City Council Members, Elkhart is quite top heavy when it comes to the number of employees for the work to be done. You guys have a lot more people on your payroll for the amount of work that needs to be done than most cities your size.  The City Payroll has already acted as a form of Welfare for many years. It's just now catching up to you.

Now that is the MOST believable statement on this thread!
