“I guarantee stopping the city from setting a cost on its own services where companies are free not to accept the services will lead to a reaction from the city’s representatives,” Moore said.

Free not to accept? Isn't this the same city that is getting ready to shut county people's sewer service off if they don't accept the possibility of being annexed?

Free not to accept, my @$$.

Further evidence that this mayor is extremely well suited to work in the street department, where there are lots of shiny new machines to admire.

Never fear folks! Lil' Timmy and his buddies at  A.L.E.C. are hard at work on the issue.

Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it.

The county and city (are) not fighting.” Moore said. “Basically, the county and city are working together.”

This is not "meddling" this is protecting the rights of the people from what we used to call in Public Economics class "The natural monopoly tyranny of the last mile."

If Wesco passes this law, we should start pressuring Wesco and other State Reps to do something about the growing disparity between the market price of Natural Gas and the what we actually pay, or the high costs of electricity because the CEO's salary is 10 times what it was 10 years ago.

While the Mayor's attempt to price gouge is bad, at least he is not using it to raise his own salary.

I am glad I am not a Democrat in Elkhart County when I see things said like this.

What CEO?  How much has it goine up?

Are you saying the CEO's salary is the only reason cost has gone up?

Obamahater (4/2/2013)
This is why I am leaning towards being a straight republican instead of middle of the road. Republicans have better morals and care about their fellow man instead of ruling with the iron fist!

On average you are right.  But there are a few that are as bad as democrats.

I’m not defending Moore’s tactics here but Weso’s involvement has done nothing but further confuse the issue.  I also agree with the Mayor that the legislature has demonstrated hostility towards the local units of government.  This is another example of their “father knows best” mentality.  The fact that Wesco didn’t even bother to engage the city in a discussion prior to proposing legislation to deal with this “injustice” shows this has less to do with crafting policy that makes sense as it does with playing populist politics.
Tim-why don’t you spend some time in the city and attempt to fully understand the issue from both sides before you go all Norma Rae on us.

Wesco will have a backlash?  I doubt that!  He is trying to protect businesses, because this foolish mayor is producing a fee structure that will surely cause businesses to leave the area.  Your job mayor is to provide incentive and a climate for job producing businesses to carry on their day to day work without this ridiculously calculated fee.  Wake up Council members!

They mayor says the people of Elkhart are paying retail . . . the businesses outside of Elkhart who have been dealt a 300% increase are going to be paying wholesale.  Huh???

County residents were forced to hook up to City services when septics failed.  Not a first.  The rate hikes were the issue as the City moved away from the 3x rate system then provided discounts to the RV Hall of Fame.  County residents lost their voice as many were unaware of the issue when they purchased or the formula changed for them, either way they vote for and are represented by County officials not the City.  These residents cannot force the mayor to respond to their pleas nor can the County change the mayor's stance on the issue.  The impasse is an appropriate action by the State on behalf of the people that have a fee (tax) but no one as described to settle the matter.  Annexation is the best option for the residential customers however the commercial compact is a wrong formula.  This should be a common sense issue and paying 3x rate for 25 years, is that not enough?  I get upset with my standard rate...multiply times three every month...this is not intended to be a revenue stream but to cover the usual cost of operation to provide the service.
