How can any of the schools have funding issues. ALL homeowners pay exorbitant taxes whether they use the schools or not. Remember the Lottery money---how many dollars have been received? All types of stores like Target and Walmart provide school help---they advertise this all the time.  Community events for school supplies, clothes, food. Kids have fundraisers. Many schools need repairs, so where is all the money going? Teachers complain they do not get paid well so where is the money?

Not replacing 5 teachers due to transportation? Are we reducing the quality of education of the children for transportation or are we overstaffed by 5 teachers?

Field trips, athletics, music, a lunch smorgasboard, summer school are extras. Learn the basics during the school year as we did years ago. Music was taught at school--no need for transportation. Swimming classes---really. Parents can teach their kids to swim during the summer at the local pool already paid for with taxes!!! Years ago outside activities were paid for by the parents or the fundraiser the kids had. Daily school transportation is the parents responsibility.

Christian schools are teaching our children better with less money and they are more well behaved. School taxes should be paid ONLY by parents using the school system. If you DO NOT have kids in school, you DO NOT pay taxes. All children can have a voucher and then they can attend which ever school they wish. If public school had to compete with christian schools, they would improve or lose their students to a better school.

Huh? If only parents of kids attending school are paying the taxes, why do you need a voucher in the first place? Just stop paying for schools with tax dollars and let the parents pay tuition directly. No vouchers needed.

CharlesUFarley---You are right. Paying tuition directly would take another  government layer away---administering the voucher---so the tuition money would "go farther" in paying school expenses.  If everyone paid tuition, we would not worry if one is here legally or not as they are paying for the education. I'm certain school expenses would be reduced, hopefully education would improve as schools would be competing for the students and many of the "extras" would probably go away as they would no longer be funded thru taxes.

I don't understand why I as a taxpayer, have to pay for sports, music etc.  The children are suppose to be learning the basics.  If the parents want their children in the "extra" things let them pay for them.   I shouldn't have to pay for tennis, football, swimming etc.  Think of all the money that the taxpayers would save by the parents of the children paying for these.  The children could have fundraisers such as car washes, cleaning yards for money.  If the child has to earn the money instead of the parents it might mean more to them.  I am not talking about the kids being sent home forms for selling products that are way overpriced.  Most parents take these to their work place and put the "thumb" on their co workers.   The children don't really earn any money.

FreeAmerican---you are right. When I grew up any fundraisers had to be done by the kids so we learned respect for money and hard work.

If we go to a tuition based system, parents take responsibility for their children. If Christian parents can pay for their childrens' school, there is no reason all parents cannot pay tuition for their children.

Without having to pay school taxes, people get to keep more money in their pocket as it is their money, thereby reducing some financial stress on families not using the schools.

This statement is the basis of what I cal the ignorance of the taxpayer.  When tax payers ranted against "high" property taxes a few years back the foundational belief was that there is the same kind of tremendous waste in state and local government expenditures that there is in Washington, and this belief is a fallacy.  State and local government budgets are required by law to be to be balanced.  While there are, to be sure, items in the state budgets that my fellow contributors will see in differing lights as necessary or not, there is very little waste.  On top of that some items in the state budgets are required by the State Constitution, to be increased every year.

Too funny, Jack. There is still a LOT of waste at state and local levels. Just because the numbers are smaller (because the budgets are smaller) doesn't mean it isn't there. There is lots of room for pork.

The best way to cut down on government waste and corruption? Make government smaller.

The kids and their parents DO pay for their extra-curricular activities.  We all pay participation fees and, in the case of Goshen Schools, we pay for our transportation.  We also do any number of fundraisers.  If you haven't been mobbed by school fundraiser, let me know where you live and as soon as school starts next year I'll sell in your neighborhood.

To be blunt, it's those who refuse to see the value of music or sports that are the idiots, and NOT the other way around.

Let me see if I understand this.   You as the parent have paid for the land, buildings etc out of your pockets for football, track, tennis etc.  You paid for the swimming pool install and upkeep.  This was paid for by tax dollars.  You may pay for a few small items but the salary of the teachers isn't paid for out of the parents pockets.

I am not saying that sports are a bad thing for the kids at all.  I'm just tired of paying for it with my tax dollars.
