TCE contamination is common in Elkhart but it's not the end of the world  - Any carbon filter will take it out and so will the aerators at the Elkhart Wellfield drinking water site nearby.

I would take a shower from this water with a $45 carbon filter shower head attachment or drink it through a Britta pitcher.

I hope we don't have to spend too many tax dollars on an expensive remediation of this problem.  I'm not at IDEM but Indiana officials under Pence at that Agency I bet would take the same kind of conservative Superfund scoring approach that I would take towards this discovery.

I don't usually agree with Mr. Butler but this time I do. TCE is a very common problem left over from manufacturing processes. Put in a well and some sprinklers and the problem will disappear into thin air.

Everyone wants to beat up on business these days like they all have a money tree somewhere. At one point in time this town and county was full of good high paying jobs. There are still some but it isn't near what it was.

If you want to fix the worst of the pollution around here now take a look at the North East corner of Prairie St. and Middlebury St. southwards towards Richmond. Indiana St. on the North from Prairie East to Main.

Go to the schools and look for children getting free medical care and free food because their parents don't have an identity. Look at the police blotter and the courts for people who get arrested for driving without EVER getting a driver's license or not having insurance. The Elkhart Truth doesn't even publish their names in the arrest reports. Drive down Main St. starting at the Railroad Museum South to Dunlap. There are more green, white and red flags than red, white and blue.

yeah...put in a well, sprinkle and it will dissipate in the error...after you inhale the vapors and get cancer...This is why you are not allowed to put in a well at the conrail yard superfund site.  They don't want the water from the ground contaminating the top layer and have installed water hookups... This is why after nearly 30 years they are still trying to remove it from the railroad yard.  Very common, unfortunately, and dangerous.  Another contamination site in little Elkhart....this small town has more contamination areas than most bigger towns!

The city gets rid of TCE in their north well field by putting it into the air where it evaporates.  But, and it is a big butt, it can also be gotten rid of in a much safer way be heating the soil in a special rotating burner which turns it into less hazardous hydrocarbons.  About the flags south of town.  SHAME SHAME SHAME.  There should be red white and blue flags alongside the others.  After all it is this country that allows them to fly their red white and green ones!!!  They are reaping the benefits and are not willing to acknowledge that?????

It's expensive to excavate and heat soil and where does the energy come from to do that.

Please do a complete environmental impact study of the proposed remediation process and show me why it is necessary.

Oh my goodness yes, there must have been 55 different businesses in that building prior to Walter Piano, and probably ten of them used the solvents in question. That site is loong past being able to do any finger-pointing at culprits, as I'm sure they were many "back in the day" when they really didn't know any better.
