We need a lot more information than this press release from the Elkhart Police makes it sound like an officer shot and killed an unarmed man.

Very eerie I just read an an article over the weekend where a 14 year old boy got in an argument with his father and took the fathers car. To teach the boy a lessen the father called the police and reported the car stolen. When, after a chase, the police got the car stopped the youth wouldn't turn off the engine but instead revved it up. The police shot and killed the kid. The police officials stated they shot him because he wouldn't obey. Really that is the official statement. Because he wouldn't obey them they assassinated him.

The family off course is devastated and they had no idea the police would shoot an unarmed teenager.

Too many stories like this lately.

I'm not making any assumptions here just questioning the lack of information in this press release.

Pete:  I agree with you on this one.  All people are presumed innocent unless proven guilty IN A COURT OF LAW............not by some street cop!!!!
Don't people care about their rights, anymore.
They just presume that if a cop or prosecutor says you did it, you did it.  In our nation, that decision is for a judge or jury of your peers.

The article you read about the boy left out some important facts.  Like he used his car to ram the other officers.  I read the same one too, and also read a few more that came out.  But I agree, they should have more info instead of just trying to be the first to release the scoop.  But we live in a society where we pull over when red or blue lights are behind us.  And it is usually the criminals that run.  It is a dangerous job to be a cop and sometimes they need to make split decisions.  Good people don't run from the cops. Hopefully more info will be released during the investigation.

Does anyone besides me realize what UNDER INVESTIGATION means? It means that the State Police are gathering facts. Elkhart turns all police involved shootings over to the Indiana State Police to AVOID charges of collusion and coverup.

This isn't about whether the man was guilty or not.

There are those who will blame the cop, regardless of circumstances. There are those who will blame then perp, regardless of circumstances.

Now, I ask you, do you KNOW how many police officers Are killed as a result of what most would call 'simple traffic stops?'

As for the 'boy' that was shot - do you realize that a vehicle is considered a 'deadly weapon' and crashing into a police car that is chasing you is ATTEMPTED MURDER? Further, any kid who is old enough to steal a car and run from the cops is old enough to kill a cop, also. do a search for shootings in Elkhart - or anywhere else - and see the ages of the perps.

I noted on Facebook that the ever-so unbiased and reliable witnesses on Marion street are already spreading rumors that the man 'tried to surrender.' I highly doubt it. If he wanted to 'surrender' he should have pulled over to begin with.

Overall, the story had a lot more information in an ongoing investigation. Anything that could have been added was deferred due to the investigation, and we were informed. The police have not released the name of the person killed, but will within 24 hours, the names of the officers involved will be released within 48. The main information about what lead up to the actual events of the shooting are here. More will be released when the ISP has finished their investigation.

Amazing how so many people are willing to point fingers at either the perpetrator or the police. A person, including police, is considered innocent until proven guilty.

This is much preferable to the current tag and release approach to career criminals.
