Eaters would pay a small fee and walk to the downtown businesses to sample the soups. Judges (including myself) would vote for their favorite and members of the public would as well.

 I've been there the past few years and was never charged a fee. I did notice less participants last year.

 The Dowagiac ice festival also does not have a fee for theirs. Niles does.
