Let's discuss 'Steps toward saving'.

Next week 1,400 students who had previously ridden the bus to school will walk instead. Over the summer, Elkhart Community Schools officials have been preparing to implement the walk zone shift that was announced by the district in May. And in preparation for Tuesday's first day of school there are a few things they would like students, parents and residents to keep in mind. Jodee Shaw,

Simple - the little darlin's can do what I did when I went to school...put on their coats, hats, mittens, and boots and do something that is foreign to them nowadays --- WALK to school...rain or shine.

"The point that we try to make is it doesn't matter whether or not we cut the lawns because that's a different budget," Shaw said.

So why was the transportation budget chosen rather than another?

The notification process to parents and community must have cost a sufficient amount, along with the route planning, the community education process, extra crossing guards and etc.The children will now have to endure the harsh winters with their 1,2,and 3 mile treks. The absenteeism and lost funds d/t it from federal and state funding should possibly cost everyone more than the $200,000.00 noted as savings. Good going people!

If just one kid gets abducted or hurt and is in one of these extended walk zones, it wouldn't have been worth it. This does not affect my children, but I think it still sucks, and I feel sorry for those parents that will have to send their little ones off for a 2 mile walk, sometimes alone and almost dark out.

I like Osolo's expanded walk zone. Its just the street on the East side of the playground. That's one long walk!

Looks like Memorial added about 3 streets to their walk zones.

The State of Indiana aleady is complaining that the kids in our state are too fat.  Children are not allow to bring cupcakes or other sweets into the classroom to celebrate birthdays and teacher are not allowed to reward students with any form of treats that have any resemblence to candy.  Hey, maybe Elkhart found a way to help get the kids into fit, lean, learning machines.  Nah, the freakin parents will not allow their babies to walk if it is cold or make them put on a raincoat if it is rainy.

Mine are already walkers. If it gets too cold or rains and you're working, then you opt for what many have done for years: call another parent and/or carpool the kids to/from school.

But that would mean we might have to actually meet another parent close by get to know each other and swap favors to help each other out. The horror.

Studies have been done giving kids physical fitness activities before school for a certain amount of time and their academic performances improved. My kids hated being trapped in a school bus with jerky kids. Being a walker has some pluses.

There's no way in hell I'd make my kid walk to school in some of these temperatures. If the State requires them to be there then the State can get them there.... cause I aint going outside either.

I don't care what anybody says.. "Chesterdrawer" is only one word.
