Let's discuss 'Poor economy hit African-Americans 'first and worst''.

Umeki Williams would flip burgers if given the opportunity. "I'm looking for anything right now," said the unemployed mother of four, who lost her job at a portrait studio last June. "I'm not discriminating against anything." But even fast-food eateries aren't hiring, which explains the African-American woman's presence this day at Visual Designs Hair Studio here. She's using the computer at the

"We thought we was going to see a better change since we have a black president," he said. "But it's going to take time. He's trying to straighten it out, what the white folks did."

Oh that's nice!

I am sorry people but this is not a black and white issue.  It has hit all colors just as bad.  Black President or White President, it does not matter.  We are all in the same boat!!!

OK we have had articles about how the economy has hit the illegal population, the legal mexican population, the black community.........has there been an article about how it has hit the white woman yet..........or better yet the old while woman.Smile

It has hit ALL of us, every color, every age bracket, everyone! Our community has come together to help each other ..... as much as we can. I trully feel this is simply wait it out times, help each other as we can even if it is nothing more then an ear to listen.

Boundaries & beliefs are nothing more than ideas or concepts that we have commited to & accepted as truth. They become the prison walls that we inadvertently construct around ourselves ----

This is not a race issue, it is an issue of economy, and of polliticians who have no idea what the average person has to deal with on a daily basis.  Unfortunately these same politicians are the ones making policy.

As far the race card getting thrown out there, there are more white people in this area that are unemployed than anyone else, but if somebody came up with a program to spend stimmulus money to jumpstart the white community excluseivly that would be considered by most to be gross discrimination, but to do this for the black community would be acceptable.  Why is this, somebody please explain this to me

This is a lot of bull. Anyone who lives in Elkhart County knows the worst hit are the illegal aliens, sorry, the undocumented workers. One thing we do know that based on the stories from the "Truth?", it's not the white folk.

Wake up people, this is not about race.

Am I missing something I'm black and I am lucky to have a job. But something I always notice about some white people is that if an article is written talking about blacks or latinos some whites take offense to that why? When you look at society as a whole the money the power all over the world is controlled by white people even in Africa where African's out number whites 5 to 1 white people control all the natural resources. My point is like that statement in the article even when times where good blacks still had a higher unemployment rate than any nationality why is the question. I am not the one to make excuses as I read the article you here these women with 3 and 4 kids and no dad in the home or 3 and 4 kids by different men. Real talk blacks need to take responsibility for their lives and their communities. But when your beat down everyday in the media and in your own home on daily basis you get what we have now in the black community underacheviers. This city has never been a place where african americans blossom even with a 4 yr degree.

Look in the mirror do you like what you see if not change it. It's America people.

I didn't read the article yet, just wanted to say to tawaun79, excellent post. For once I agree with you.

I was moved about a month ago by a piece by Barbara Ehrenreich called The Destruction of the Black Middle Class.

http://ehrenreich.blogs.com/barbaras_blog/2009/08/the-destruction-of-the-black-middle-class.html

edited to add: read it. And Vandenack you're still the best. Wink

The info and quote by Ms. Fox is really important.

"The society which over-rewards people who simply happen to be standing in the right place at the right time will waste its effort in a constant jostling match to be lucky, rather than good."

What an inflamatory article.  So much for news, this should be in the opinion section.  Race has nothing to do with how poor the economy is?  Look around.  Isn't everybody feeling the pinch?  I was hiring at my business, I was looking for experience in my trade.  Although I got A LOT of applicants, there wasn't a single qualified black person.  Does this make me a racist?  No, just a smart businessman looking for an applicant with previous experience.  Period.  I can care the least what color the persons skin is.  All I look at is past experience and if you can do the job I need.  It is articles like these that inflame race issues.  I guess news is slow in elkhart.

AMEN to JAF,

Unfortunately if a black man and a white man apply for the same job, and the job goes to the white man because he is more qualified then you sir are considered a racist.  But at the same time if both men apply and the black man is given the job because he is black, then you are considered to be an equal oppertunity employer. (because you hired a minority). Why would you not be considered a racist toward whites?

I appologize if I sound like a racist when I say this, but given the content of the article, it would be hard to offer an oppinion for or against either side without sounding racist toward black or white, and it goes the same way for any ethnic group.

I have been off work for quite some time, and one thing has come to present itself to me quite clearly.  Too many employers are more concearned about either the bottom line(cost), or getting a gov. contract because they employ minorities. A 40-something year old white man has little to no chance, even if he does have 25 years experience in a particular field.....

But don't worry OBAMA gonna fix it all.
