Coy D. Lawhorn

BRISTOL - Coy D. Lawhorn, 91, formerly of Bristol, passed away at 10:20 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at Woodland Home AFC in Berrien Springs, Mich.

He was born Dec. 5, 1921, in High Coal, W.Va., to George Otis and Ella (Woodrum) Lawhorn.

On July 29, 1946, in Blakley, W.Va., he married Eileen Judd. She preceded him in death in June 1994.

Surviving are a son, Charles E. Lawhorn of Berrien Springs; five granddaughters; one grandson; two great-granddaughters; and one great-grandson. Also surviving are Richard Proctor of Topeka, Linda Tony of Goshen and Roger Proctor and Harold Proctor, both or Charleston, W.Va., for all of whom he was guardian.

Coy was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ella, and two of his sons, Jeffery David and Ronald Dee.

Coy was a lifetime member of Bristol American Legion Post 143. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II from 1942 until 1945, where he spent 26 months in Africa.

Coy loved spending time with his family, gardening, country music and his dog, "Jake". He worked for Dexter Axle for 16 years. He also worked in the coal mines of West Virginia and at LRV Co. of Elkhart.

Visitation for Coy will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home, where the funeral service will start at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Rice Cemetery where the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard and Elkhart DAV will render military honors.

Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

thank you all for the kind words, thoughts, and prayers for my Dad. he was a good man and a great Father, always a good providor and took care of his family. and family was always first with him. i spent the last 18 years watching over him since Mom had passed. i felt it was my duty because he had taken care of all of us through the years. i will always carry him in my heart and in my thoughts daily. may God welcome him into his heavenly kingdom.

I met Coy in 2006 and promised him I will take care of him until he dies and I did. He went peacefully. We had a great relationship. I did learn a lot of things from a great guy who had accomplished a lot of things. He had helped a lot of people along the way. He was quiet and funny. He had lived with us for almost two years and made a lot of friends. I will miss you Coy... I ADORE YOU ... YOU KNOW THAT ... I LOVE YOU... REMEMBER WHAT YOU PROMISED ME ...
