James C. Barber

GOSHEN - James Curtis Barber, 76, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Elkhart General Hospital

He was born March 9, 1936, in San Francisco to the late James Frank Jr. and Eunice (Otwell) Barber.

He married Sandra VanderWerf June 23, 1979, in Goshen. She survives.

Also surviving are two children, Lynn Barber of Las Vegas and Greg Barber of Sacramento, Calif.; a granddaughter, Ryane (James) Shields; two great-granddaughters, Ashtyn and Camden; his stepmother, Anne B. Barber of Elgin, Okla.; four sisters, Patricia (Bud) Bylsma of Beaverton, Ore., Carolyn Moussa of Citrus Heights, Calif., Linda Wells of Noble, Okla., and Jamie Porter of Lawton, Okla.; and a brother, James F. Barber III of Elgin.

MSG Barber retired from the U.S. Army in 1988 and then from the U.S. Postal Service in 2001.

He was a member of River Oaks Community Church, PM Mount Scott Lodge 540, Goshen Masonic Lodge 12, DAV Post 15, American Legion Post 30 and Scottish Rite.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, where a 5:45 p.m. Masonic service will take place.

Friends may also call one hour prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at River Oaks Community Church, 58020 C.R. 115, Goshen. Pastor Scott Tilley will officiate.

Burial will follow the funeral at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Mich., at 2:30 pm.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Wounded Warrior Project.
