Alan H. Nadon

April 1, 1943 - Feb. 10, 2013

ELKHART - Alan H. Nadon, 69, of Elkhart, passed away at 6:50 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

He was born on April 1, 1943, in Chicago, to the late Albert and Mae (Brown) Nadon.

On May 28, 1971, he married Winifred Irene "Renie" Waltner in Elkhart.

Alan is survived by two brothers, Dennis (Janet) Nadon of Schaumburg, Ill., and Robert (Barbara) Nadon of Elkhart; and two stepbrothers, Terry (Pat) Riendeau of Gonzales, La., and Donald John "DJ" (Marla) Riendeau of Elkhart. He had many nieces and nephews - too numerous to mention.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Renie; and a brother, David Nadon.

Alan retired in 2010 as electrical inspector for the city of Elkhart after 29 years of employment, having held this position since 1981. He was a member of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors and has served as the Indiana chapter chairman, and the Indiana chapter representative to the 18-state western section of that organization. Inspector Nadon served as a shipboard electrician in the U.S. Navy in the 1960s, after which he worked for an electrical equipment manufacturer in the Chicago area, and then electrical contractors and wholesalers in the Elkhart area before becoming the inspector. He had also been employed by a third party inspection agency for manufactured housing bearing the H.U.D Label. He was a licensed master electrician having passed both the local master electricians exam and the "Block" master electrician exam, by Experior. Alan also wrote a column 'Excerpts from an Inspector's Journal' for the Tom Henry newsletter for electricians "The Informer."

Alan graduated from Elkhart High School in 1961 and received his bachelor's degree in business from Indiana University South Bend in 1979.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1965. He was a life-time member of the Elkhart Moose Lodge, MENSA and IAEI.

He had many diverse interests and hobbies. He was an excellent artist who liked classical music, loved Legos and trains, had miniature Civil War soldiers and participated in re-enactments, was active in politics, liked to fish, and gave generously to all types of organizations.

In the words of one of his many friends, "Alan was beloved by all, and I felt a special friend towards me. That was what was so unique about him. He made everyone feel as if they were his 'special friend.'"

A memorial service is being planned for later in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the charity, church, organization or cause of your choice.

Elkhart Cremation Services is entrusted with arrangements.

Memories and Condolences

Dennis Hiebert, Los Angeles, CA

Dennis Hiebert, Los Angeles, CA I am happy that I was able see Alan last Labor Day weekend when I was in Elkhart meeting with friends planning a Partly Dave Reunion. The Partly Dave Coffeeehouse was one outlet for Alan to express his art, politics, and make long lasting friends. I remember many of Alan and Renie's wonderful parties at the "Swamp" I think they called it. I am sorry Alan won' be attending the coffeehouse reunion in June but he will be part of a remembrance service we will have from many of our coffeehouse friends.

Jennifer Glick, Goshen, IN

Alan was a kind and generous friend, who will be missed by our family. Our prayers go out to the family. Rest in peace, Alan.

Margaret McMillan, Montgomery Village, MD

A wonderful husband to my beloved longtime friend Renie; a staunch advocate for peace and social justice; and the guy who kept Elkhart's lights on for decades, Alan will long be remembered. I was often the beneficiary of his quiet kindness, as was my mother in her last years.

Ken Scott, Osceola, IN

Brent Brill, Elkhart, IN

Though some viewed Alan harsh and strict, I always found him reasonable and fair. We've lost a true authority and among the most knowledgable in the electrical trade, locally and otherwise. R.I.P. Alan.

Melody Conard, Katy, TX

I worked with Alan at The City Hall in Elkhart, we started working there the same year, Rest In Peace Alan.
