ELKHART - Charles R. Minegar Jr., 88, of Elkhart, passed away at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at Eastlake Terrace.
He was born June 14, 1924, in Elkhart to Charles R. Sr. and Wanda (Zipser) Minegar.
Surviving are a sister, Waneta (Richard) Straw of South Bend; a niece, Elizabeth Straw of Vincennes; and two nephews, Richard (Lynne) Straw of Jones, Mich., and Michael W. Straw of Central Lake, Mich. Also surviving are seven great-nieces and great-nephews, including Shane A. Straw, who resided with Chuck during his last two years of high school, and 11 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Chuck graduated from Elkhart High School in 1942, Elmhurst College in 1950 and Indiana University with a master's degree in languages in 1952. He was also in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, 97th Infantry. Chuck taught at the Southern Arizona School for Boys from 1953 to 1957.
In 1966, he became dean of the SAS. In 1957, he got a Fulbright Scholarship to study in France, earning a diploma from the University of Poitier for graduate work at the Sorbonne. In 1958, he got a Fulbright Scholarship to study German, earning a diploma from the University of Vienna in Austria and taught English at a boarding school. From 1960 until 1966, Chuck was a counselor for the band at Culver Summer Naval School, where he attained the longest consecutive years as a counselor. During his tenure as counselor for the band, it won many awards and achievements not previously won.
From 1967 until 1989, he taught French and German at Albuquerque Academy. He expanded a two-year French program into a five-year program and began a literature and five-year program in German. He often said that one never stops learning a language, even one's own, and was always thrilled to see his students surpass him.
At both Culver Academy and Albuquerque Academy, he was a volunteer in the sports departments where he worked as a scorekeeper, timer and did whatever was necessary to help the coaches, especially with the basketball and football teams. He continued to work with the Albuquerque Academy Sports department until 2000. He received many plaques and trophies for recognition of his continued support and loyalty.
Visitation for Chuck will be two hours prior to the 1 p.m. service Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Officiating will be the Rev. Catherine Kozia from Albright United Methodist Church in Mishawaka and the Rev. John von Lackum from St. John's United Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Rice Cemetery, where U.S. Army Burial Detail and the Elkhart DAV will render military honors.
