ELKHART - Bonnie Mae Baum, 94, of Elkhart, died Monday, April 8, 2013, at Hospice House of Elkhart.
Bonnie was born Sept. 6, 1918, in Kendallville, to Alfred R. and Clela Mae (Ross) Bryant.
She married Morten F. Baum on Aug. 4, 1962, in Kendallville. He died Oct. 23, 2004.
Surviving are her cousin, Mary Esther (Bob) Smith of Largo, Fla.; daughter Carolyn Chamberlin; granddaughter Laura (Kevin) Hueni of Granger; grandsons Donald (Naela) Lytell, Luke (Cynthia) Lytell and John (Jeanne) Lytell; and nine great-grandchildren.
Bonnie graduated from Bloomington High School in 1935, Indiana University in 1939 and received her masters from Indiana University in 1949. From 1940-44 she taught at New Paris High School, from 1944-45 she taught at Albion High School and from 1945-48 she taught at Wilson Junior High School in Muncie. Bonnie was a counselor at Northside Junior High School, Elkhart, from 1949-78. She retired in June of 1978.
She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Elkhart. Bonnie was a life member of Indiana University Alumni Club, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association and Beta Sigma Phi International. She was a member of EA Chapter of P.E.O., Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Bonnie also served as a tour guide at Ruthmere.
Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until the 1:30 p.m. service Monday, April 15, 2013, at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Rice Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Dick Dunn, a family friend, assisted by the Rev. Rob VanEss, pastor at First Congregational United Church of Christ.
