WHITE PIGEON, Mich. - Rebecca Ruth (Phillips) (Murphy) Walter, 90, of White Pigeon, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the home of her daughter.
She was born Nov. 1, 1922, in Terre Haute, Ind., to Floyd and Esther (Caton) Phillips.
She married Homer Murphy in 1947 and then Dean Walter in 1963. They both preceded her in death.
Surviving are a daughter, Deana Marie (Michael) Walter-Lantz of Elkhart, Ind.; and two grandchildren, Alex and Sam Lantz, both of Elkhart.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn and Patty.
Rebecca graduated from Wiley High School in Terre Haute. She was a Girl Scout leader and went on to graduate from Indiana State Teachers College with a master's degree in teaching. She taught school in Fort Wayne, Ind., and Sturgis. She also worked for Kirsch in Sturgis. As a substitute teacher she taught at Constantine, White Pigeon, Baldwin Prairie and Bristol (Indiana). After her retirement from teaching she received the Golden Apple Award from Sister Virginia's Adult Basic Education.
Rebecca was a member of O.E.S., and Bristol United Methodist Church, and was a Sunday school teacher. She was an avid reader. While teaching about maple syrup she made pancakes for her school children.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2013, at the funeral home. Pastor Fred Stayton from Bristol United Methodist Church will preside. Cremation will follow.
Memorial contributions may be given to the National Wildlife Foundation.
