SAN DIEGO - Betty Cohn, 90, formerly of Elkhart, Ind., died Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at home in Rancho Bernardo.
She was born Dec. 22, 1922, in Mishawaka, Ind., to Jerry and Lillian Grossman.
Betty married Melvin Cohn on Aug. 4, 1940, in Dubuque, Iowa. He survives.
She is also survived by a daughter, Sherron (Jack) Schuster of Rancho Santa Fe; two sons, Larry (Peg) Cohn of Avila Beach and Bob (Sue) Cohn of Newport News, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Betty, Mel and their family moved to Elkhart in 1947. Betty and Mel lived in Elkhart for many years and were well regarded and highly respected members of the Elkhart community. Some years after Mel retired, Betty and Mel moved to the San Diego area.
Betty was affiliated with Temple Israel in Elkhart; Temple Adat Shalom in Rancho Bernardo; the Jewish Community Foundation in San Diego; the Interfaith Community Services, San Diego; the Seacrest Community, Rancho Bernardo; the Jewish Federation, San Diego; Jewish Family Services, San Diego; and numerous other charities. Betty and Mel have bestowed many college scholarships on deserving applicants.
Her strength, grace and generosity were an inspiration to her family and friends. Betty was known for her wicked sense of humor in social settings. She also enjoyed a considerable reputation as an avid and talented cook. Betty published a cookbook of her own which she distributed to her many friends.
Funeral services were at Temple Adat Shalom on Thursday, May 2, 2013.
