SOUTH BEND - Richard T. Smith, 83, residing in South Bend, passed away at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Arborwood Assisted Living Center, Granger.
He was born Nov. 16, 1929, in Plymouth to the late Cecil Thomas and Goldie (Brown) Smith, and remained a lifelong area resident.
On June 30, 1955, in South Bend Richard married the former Donna Marie Patterson, who survives.
In addition to his loving wife, Donna of South Bend, Richard is survived by his daughter, Karen Smith-Taljaard and Robert Guthrie of South Bend; son Kevin Smith of Whiteland; and four grandchildren, Spencer and Tara Taljaard and Chandler and Bailey Smith.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Chelsea Taljaard; sisters Ruth and Dorothy; and brothers Harry, Gale, Collin and Robert.
Richard served his country honorably in the United States Army.
He retired from the Elkhart Truth as production engineer in 1993 after 25 years.
Richard was a member of St. Joseph Lodge 45, F. & A.M. and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, where he received the Meritorious Service Award. He was also a member of Knights Templar and Orak Shrine, Michigan City, and was a driver for the Shriners' Children's Hospital, Chicago.
A Masonic memorial service will be at 4 p.m Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Palmer Funeral Home, Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 5, 2013, at the funeral home prior to services.
Burial will take place at a later date in Highland Cemetery.
