ELKHART - Robert L. "Bob" Ballard, 71, of Elkhart, passed away at 6:10 a.m. Monday, May 13, 2013, in his home.
He was born Aug. 22, 1941, in Glasgow, W.Va., to Howard and Lorena (Phillips) Ballard. On March 11, 1960, in Elkhart he married Ruby Ellen Goldy.
She survives along with five children, Robert L. Jr. (Sherry) Ballard of Howe, Donna E. Morris of Fort Wayne, Mart E. (Sally) Ballard of Columbia City, John Morris of Elkhart and Linda Fry of Middlebury; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Peggy Morton of Charleston, W.Va., Elma Richards of Cedar Grove, W.Va., and Glenna Ballard of Tullahoma, Tenn.; four brothers, Howard Ballard Jr. of Cleveland, William Ray Ballard and David (Yon) Ballard, both of Charleston, and James Ballard of Charlotte, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepmother, Mary Bryant of Cedar Grove; a brother, George T. Ballard of Glasgow; four grandchildren, Cortney, Jason, Nathan and Shanna Ballard; and a great-granddaughter, Paisley Ballard.
Bob enjoyed tinkering in his garage and back in the 1960s he raced cars at New Paris, South Bend and the Mottville speedways. He worked as a punch press operator at Vincent Bach for 40 years, retiring in 2001.
Visitation for family and friends will be for two hours prior to the 6 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2013, service at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. His grandson Jeremiah Ballard will preside. Cremation will take place at Elkhart Cremation Services.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Center for Hospice Care, Elkhart.
