GOSHEN - Helen I. Washington, 81, passed away early Sunday evening, July 7, 2013, at IU Health Goshen Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 26, 1932, in Cadott, Wis., to Albert and Dorothy Knitter. She married Jack D. Washington on June 13, 1953, in Cadott. He preceded her in death on June 14, 2010.
She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl (Bill Rankinen) Spero of Conneaut, Ohio, and Karen (Skip) Boyer of Goshen; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Heidi) Spero, Michelle Spero, Shane (Amy) Boyer, Brooke (Jared) Keplinger, Isaiah (Chloe) Boyer, Deborah (the Rev. Ryan) Wofford and Bethany Boyer; 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Thelma Josifek of Wisconsin and Betty (Clifford) Evjen of Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Helen and Jack moved to Goshen soon after they were married, and after working for two-and-a-half years she became a full-time mother and homemaker. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
She enjoyed camping and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a special relationship with her neighbors, Rodney and Tara Wortinger, and their sons, Noah and Parker. They considered Helen a "second grandma."
Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013, at Yoder-Culp Funeral, where there will be a 6 p.m. funeral service. Pastor Jason Kincaid of First Assembly of God, Goshen, will officiate. A private family burial will be at Violett Cemetery.
