OSCEOLA - Elizabeth Riland, 78, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, July 16, 2013, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
She was born in Newfoundland, Canada, to the late William and Mary (Butler) Vickers on April 13, 1935.
She married Thomas Riland in February of 1960. He preceded her in death in 1982.
She was also preceded in death by a son, William Riland; sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Ambrose Norris; brother and sister-in-law, Herman and Patricia Vickers; and a very dedicated companion of 20 years, Melvin Keen. Elizabeth's memory will be forever treasured by her children, Thomas (Patty) Riland of Austin, Texas, Kathy Riland of Bristol, Susan (Glenn) Miller of Osceola and Timothy Riland of Mishawaka; as well as eight grandchildren; three sisters, Irene (Gerard) Healey, Margaret Roche and Bertha Williams; and two brothers, William Vickers and Vince (Josephine) Vickers.
Elizabeth was a registered nurse and retired from Sisters of the Holy Cross St. Mary's in South Bend. She was a member of Queen of Peace Parish, registering there in 1967. She participated in Widow's Club, volunteering as a cook for funeral dinners, as well as other functions at the church for more than 40 years. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary (past Madame President) Fraternal Order of Eagles in Mishawaka.
Elizabeth treasured her family and friends. Her actions and compassion toward others in need exemplified her strong faith and personal values. She loved to cook, work in her flower gardens and travel.
Throughout her life she retained an optimistic and hopeful attitude despite the adverse times and losses she experienced. Elizabeth will be greatly missed by her family and those fortunate enough to really know her. Her legacy will be the example of life well lived.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, at Zimmerman-Inman Funeral Home, 1109 Lincolnway W., Osceola. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, Aug. 2, at 10:30 a.m. with an hour of visitation immediately prior to the services, at Queen of Peace Parish, Mishawaka, with Father John Eze. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola.
