ELKHART - Louise A. Hawkins, 88, of Elkhart, passed away Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at Elkhart General Hospital.
She was born Oct. 25, 1924, in Indianapolis to Fin and Katie Mae (Wilson) Ax.
On April 30, 1946, in Indianapolis, she married Carl B. Hawkins, who preceded her in death on Nov. 4, 2010.
Surviving are two sons, Carl B. (Deborah) Hawkins of Niles, Mich., and Robert D. Hawkins of Texas; a daughter, Elaine (Joseph) Fiwek of Elkhart; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Meyer.
Louise graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, and attended Radford University in Virginia where she received her bachelor's degree in education. She retired from the welfare department as a supervisor for 10 years. Prior to that, she worked as a secretary for the American Cancer Society for five years.
Louise was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Embroidery Guild of America and American Association of University Women.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, where Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. with Father Jason Freiburger officiating. Entombment will follow in Chapel of Memories, Rice Cemetery, Elkhart.
Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral and Cremation Center, Elkhart is entrusted with the arrangements.
Memorials for Louise may be made to American Lung Association, American Heart Association or Center for Hospice Care, Elkhart.
