BELCHERTOWN, Mass. - Melvin Funk, 94, died Aug. 25, 2013.
He was born in Montana in 1919, but lived in China from ages 2 to 7. He served four years in Civilian Public Service in World War II then earned a B.A. from Bethel College, Kansas, in 1946. He met his wife of 65 years, Frances Beckenbach, in voluntary service. Melvin attended Mennonite seminary and led churches in Illinois, where his four children were born, and he earned a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Illinois.
In 1962, Melvin moved to Elkhart, Ind., to work at Oaklawn Psychiatric Center for more than 25 years. He was active in his church and loved to sail. He and Frances moved to Goshen, Ind., in 2000 and Massachusetts in 2009.
Melvin is survived by children and grandchildren, Beth, Gabriel and Alisa Funk of Anchorage, Alaska, John Funk of Portland Ore., Debby Funk of Aurora, Colo., and David, Aaron and Lydia Funk of Belchertown.
He was predeceased by Frances and three brothers, Carl, Reuben and Walter.
His memorial service will be at Hively Mennonite Church, Elkhart, at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 26, 2013.
