ELKHART - Barbara Loy, 75, of Elkhart, passed away at 7:17 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at Elkhart General Hospital.

She was born Sept. 2, 1937, in Portland to Kenneth and Mary (Bentz) Loy.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Vern Thomas; two daughters, Lisa (Douglas) Wingfield of West Virginia and Elizabeth Colburn of Rockford, Ill.; one son, Kenneth Gabbard of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a brother, Gary Loy; and six grandchildren, Rebecca Richardson, Amy Vaughn, Danielle Wendell, David Wingfield, Andrew Colburn and Ashley Colburn.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Barbara retired from Dillard University in New Orleans as a college professor and taught for a year at Medagory in Nigeria.

She enjoyed reading and writing.

A private family memorial service will be at a later date.

Elkhart Cremation Services is entrusted with arrangements.
